Millions of years ago during the formation of Texada Island, geological thrusts caused the Island to rise up from the water. It was during that time that flower-stone "in its volcanic origin" escaped to the surface scattering the material for miles. During cooling the phenocrists of feldspar burst within the porphyry matrix creating the unique flower like patterns. Just like snowflakes no two flowers are identical. Both the feldspar and the porphyry are the same 6.5 mohs. Ice Ages carried the material in bits and chunks as far as a hundred miles away. This is known as glacial float and this is what we, as semi precious stone suppliers, are selling. It is the only known deposit in the world. Similar, but less identical, porphyries are found elsewhere, such as Chinese Writing Rock and Chrysanthemum stone.

Locals on Texada Island have long referred to it as Flower Rock. Technically Flower-stone is a "Gabbro Porphyry."

Other names it has been called are Flowering Gabbro or Star Stone.

Metaphysical Properties of the stone include good luck, wealth and longevity.

Texada Island has long been a popular destination for lapidary stone hounds. This mineral rich island boasts gold, limestone, rose quartz, flower-stone. First Nations people will not go to Texada Island; they believe because the island rose up from the ocean it will fall back into it.

The island is approximately fifty (50) kilometers in length and ten (10) in width with its length aligned along a northwest southeast axis. It is the second largest island on the Strait of Georgia, Vancouver Island being the largest.

No predatory animals live on the island therefore the deer population has thrived making it a popular destination for hunters, though most deer seem stunted in growth.
